| Excellence was born to Mack and Rebecca Taunton in Flint Michigan. Mack Taunton, Gospel singer, was the lead Tenor for the Cathedral Quartet for several years and then went on to have a solid solo career in Gospel music. Steve was the "MIddle Child". As a child, Steve was exposed to many great and prominent musicians and attended Gospel concerts all over the United States. Quality music was in his blood to say the least. At the age of twelve, Steve picked up a sax and played for the school band holding first chair while never learning to read music, "It was a feel thing". At the age of 14, he learned his first tune on the guitar, "More Than a Feeling" by Boston. That was all it took and it was the Guitar from then on. This choice has been exciting for all of his fans. No one style to shelve him on but excellence in everything he plays. From Chet Adkins to Eric Clapton, Jimmi Hendrix, Jeff Beck, Lightnin Hopkins to Muddy, Steve has all of these bundled up inside him. This diverse bunch of guitar heroes combined with his Gospel past, cooks up some fine riffs and blazing but soulful solos and rhythm passages. Even getting down to honest Delta blues as he shows in his recording of Walking Blues on the new CD release, So Far, So Good.! GT seems to excel because of the raw innocence of just 2 players. Both have to hold the audience on their own part. Steve does this with ease and leaves the crowd memorized awed and sometimes spellbound. |
